Palmerston's Follies

Conceived and built in the 1860s, these fortresses located in the middle of the Solent were intended to defend England against the threat of a French naval attack. The threat never materialised and these emplacements never fired a shot in anger, hence the title of "follies".

The fort in the foreground, Spitbank Fort has been refitted as a luxury getaway retreat.
